How to Write a Resume That Fits on One Page

The advice is always the same: keep it to one page. Nobody tells you what to cut. So you shrink the font to nine point, squeeze the margins, and end up with something dense and grey that a recruiter skims for six seconds and puts down.

Cut content, not typography

Every shortcut that makes text physically smaller makes it harder to read, and readability is the entire point. Nine point type, quarter inch margins and compressed line spacing all signal the same thing: this person had more to say than fits, and would not choose.

Choosing is the skill being tested. A resume is an argument for one specific job, and an argument that includes everything argues nothing.

What to remove, in order

• Your address. A city is enough, and a full postal address dates the document.
• The objective statement. It uses four lines to say you would like the job you applied for.
• Skills nobody screens on. Microsoft Word is assumed. So is email.
• Anything older than your degree, unless it is genuinely relevant.
• References available on request. Everyone knows.
• Coursework, unless you have no work experience yet and it is directly related.

That alone usually recovers a third of a page before you touch a single bullet.

Then tighten the bullets

Most bullets carry filler at the front. Responsible for managing, worked on a team that, helped to assist with. Cut to the verb and the outcome.

Same information, half the space, and it reads like a person rather than a job description.

On metrics, honestly

You will be told every bullet needs a number. Follow that rule literally and you will invent numbers, which is worse than having none. If you genuinely tracked something, use it. If not, give scale or context instead: how many people, how often, how long, what changed.

Harvard careers guidance puts it as express rather than impress. An invented figure is one interview question away from collapsing.

When one page is the wrong target

One page is the norm for students and early careers in the US. It is not universal. A British CV commonly runs to two. An academic CV lists publications and runs as long as it needs to. Europass has its own required sections. An Indian campus placement resume usually carries your class ten and twelve percentages, which recruiters screen on directly.

Cutting an Indian placement resume down to a US one page can remove the exact numbers the recruiter is looking for. Match the convention where you are applying, not the loudest advice online.
