Why it happens
AI detectors do not actually understand meaning. They measure surface patterns: how varied your sentence lengths are, how predictable your word choices are, how evenly the text flows. Writing that is simpler, more even, and uses a narrower band of common vocabulary reads to a detector as low variation, which is the exact signal they associate with AI.
Non-native writers often produce clear, correct, careful English that happens to have those features: measured sentence length, safe common words, fewer idioms. Formal academic writing does the same. So does plain, direct writing from anyone taught to keep it simple. None of that is AI. The detector cannot tell the difference.
What to do if you are flagged, or worried you will be
- Keep your proof. Write in Google Docs or Word with version history on; your draft history and edits are the strongest evidence that the work grew over time.
- Check it yourself first. Run your writing through a detector before you submit, so you know what a machine sees and are never blindsided by a score.
- Know that a score is not proof. Detectors give a probability, not a verdict, and the tools' own makers say a score should not be the sole basis for an accusation. You are allowed to say so.
- Raise it early. If you are worried, talk to your professor before you submit and show your process. Most reasonable instructors know the false-positive problem is real.

The honest goal is not to trick a detector. It is to write English that reads clearly and sounds like a real, thinking person, which also happens to be what reduces a false flag. A few habits help:
- Vary your sentence length on purpose: put a short, direct sentence next to a longer one.
- Add one concrete, specific detail, example, or number that only you would include.
- Read it aloud; wherever it sounds stiff, use the words you would actually say.
